Persuasive Essay Homework - 1361 Words

Homework has been a topic of conversation and controversy in elementary education for as long as many people can remember, the pros and cons have been argued and researched time and time again. While most professionals in the field agree that homework is needed and helpful in middle and high school grade levels, when it comes to younger grades the information strongly shows that it is a waste of time. At its core homework has two possible effects in the home. Homework can be seen as a rule over parents from the school to manage their children’s time outside of school or as a way to inform parents on what their children are currently studying and allow them a participation in their children’s education (Wright). Around the time leading†¦show more content†¦But when it comes to the elementary grade levels, the cons of homework far outweigh the pros. The research shows time and time again that higher levels of homework in elementary school cause more issues than i t does benefits. So, what are the cons? And how can learning be encouraged outside of the classroom without it having a negative impact? In 2008 the MetLife American Teacher series polled students, teachers, and parents on their feelings and thoughts about homework and the results were as follows; one-third of parents rated the quality of homework given as fair or poor, one-quarter of students say that they as if their homework is busywork and unrelated to what they were learning in class (MetLife). But, one of the leading reasons that people support homework in elementary levels is because they believe it can kick-start healthy and even necessary habits. These habits include; time-management, study skills, independent working, etc. It is unrealistic to expect students to gain important life skills from poorly created and unrealistic homework. Jay Matthews of the Washington Post says â€Å"What most people do not know about elementary school homework is that the research strongly suggests that it is a waste of time, something I began to suspect after my daughters eighth or ninth collage.† Matthews consulted with a Duke psychologist who helped him to conclude that in elementary education the correlationShow MoreRelatedPersuasive Essay On Homework Is Homework1077 Words   |  5 Pagesstill has thirty more minutes to read, and a math test to study for. Analysis of PL Statements - 1278 Words

HBL’s Cash Balance with treasury bank over all has an increasing trend during the analysis period in net amount and percent of total asset. This means that the bank relies more on depositing cash with treasury bank, rather than relying on its deposits to other banks. Looking at the balance with other bank, there is a 7% decrease in 2010, and then a 17% increase in 2011, remaining almost the same in 2012. As a percent of total asset, there is a steady decrease. The bank might have better investment opportunities and thus does not feel comfortable to deposit with other banks. Also, since there is a decreasing trend, the bank does not seem to change its policy either. UBL also followed a steady increase of cash with Treasury Bank, as a percent of total asset. The deposit with other bank does not show a particular trend, but there is more decrease than increase. Due to these ups and downs, we cannot tell for sure if the company will change its policy in near future. It seems that UBL also follows the same strategy as HBL when it comes to deposits. However, with deposits in treasury bank of 9-10% of total assets, it exceeds HBL slightly, as HBL has 8-9 % of its total assets deposited with treasury Bank However, there is a decline in UBL’s deposits with treasury bank as a percent of total assets, but in the same year, there is an increase in the deposits with other banks. These deposits consist of 2-3 % of total assets, while in HBL it is about 4% of total assets. Illness Narratives And Social Construction Of Health

Question: Write an essay on Illness Narratives and the Social Construction of Health ? Answer: The key insight in this chapter was on socially constructed reality that results in shaping all the notions of sickness, illness and health. The social constructions lead towards creating a wall that defines the boundaries along with forging the doors by which seeing the external environment is possible (Sharf and Vanderford 9). While reading the chapter, it was of great significance to keep an argument in perspective that there are various advantages to viewing communication in health as a social construction (Sharf and Vanderford 9). Also, that there are various benefits of focusing over narratives of illness. Through use of distinct researches along with considering practical experiences in the form of narratives from women, the chapter was able to recommend that communication in health can be successfully researched through placing enhanced focus on individual experiences of the patients regarding their health and their illness. The chapter had many essential elements and the authors focused on each element to formulate an integrative chapter. Social construction approach evolution is one such element of the chapter. It was evident from this sub-section that social construction approach was adopted first in the year 1966 Luckmann and Berger (Sharf and Vanderford 9). Throughout the approachs course of development, it went through several modifications and changes such as its application in the domain of health communication. With regard to health, illness and medical care, constitutive communication model application depicts the moderating complexities present between scientific evidences and the material evidences. The approach of social construction within the domain of health communication first emerged as a biomedical perspective reaction (which has been gravely dominant in the arena of health care) (Sharf and Vanderford 21). The article moves further to illustrate that communication in medical community has been divided into 2 types of discourses. The initial type makes use of objective language for presenting information of traditional and biomedical nature. The second type makes us of subjective language for talking on illness related non-verifiable and internal experiences. Another essential fragment in the research were significance of narratives and the health scholarship based social construction. The article argued that in order to enhance the social construction approach implementation into health communication, a distinct type of scholarship is needed. Narrative inquiry is one of them (Brown 34-52). The view highlighted the origin of the stress between physical reality and symbolic appearances and the application of such process to issues of communication with regard to illness and health. Even though narrative inquiry is only one the various ways to approach research in health communication but the methods benefits lie in knowledge application with regard to implications that individuals such as authors Rose have quoted. Often, the patients voice in the clinical realm is absent because of the focus on health communication as an inquiry field (Mattingly and Garro 101-230). The personal stories construction regarding illness and pain are essential for people that deal with serious sickness. This allows the individual to make sense of a circumstance that initially might seem to have no evident explanation. The article concluded by stating that narrative inquiry according to several authors such as Bochner, (1998), is at the core of moral acts (Sharf and Vanderford 34). It implies one that has purposiveness and self-consciousness intertwined with narrators values. References Sharf, Barbara F., and Marsha L. Vanderford. The Huron People Essays - First Nations In Ontario,

The Huron People Primary source center850008549640 October 4, 2017 Dennis McKim Rizwan Ramzan1000000 October 4, 2017 Dennis McKim Rizwan Ramzan The following source The Huron Creation story was a story that was passed down generation to generation of the Huron people which was mainly told during the winter times in a gathering. The following reading was interoperated by Catherine Johnson in 1912 who was from the Huron decent. The following source is about how the Huron people came to be and the land they live on, the author obviously found the story interesting and wanted to show people how different cultures had different beliefs on how the world came to be. The source is about a woman who doesn't have a name but in other versions of the tale her name is Aataentsic who basically made a mistake on cutting all the crops her siblings used to eat and in anger they threw her in a hole which fell to the ocean. She fell on top of wild geese and the animals took turns holding the woman on their backs while she was on the water . At one point the woman was on the turtles back and the toad gave her sand and told her to sprinkle it , as she did the land came to creation. Then there are two versions but the woman finds two twin boys, the younger being bad and the older being good. The older brother created all the Huron people and the living things. While the younger who also wanted to create people created monkeys in perspective of them being human. Though the younger brother was portrayed bad he doesn't do anything terrible in the story itself but he would be considered the bad of the two. The other version of th e story the woman gave birth to these two twins and dies during the delivery of the boys. Overall the story itself is about the woman and the twin boys who create the land and the people of the Huron people and all living creatures. The main theme of this story is about the creation of the Huron people. How the twins create the good, bad and all living things on the land. And the woman who was thrown to the ocean created the land itself with the animals that took care of her. It also shows or one can portray that the respect of animals is very important for this group of indigenous people. This is shown how the animals help the woman stay afloat on the water and then help her by telling her ow to create the land. The animals also took turns on carrying the woman as well. So overall you can see the importance of animals in the story and it can make one believe that animals had a very important part in the life of these people. There is no real reason why the story was translated or shown, but obviously the main readers of this would be historians or people just in general. This story shows a different view and how different people of the world believe how they came to be. Every culture or religion has different stories on how the world was created and how they came to be and this was their story. For myself personally looking at this story and my cultures belief on how we came to be is very different since we believe we came from Adam and Eve but through the Islamic way and in a Muslim perspective over Christianity , but still it is very different but very interesting at the same time that for them one male twin created all of them and the world around them. Furthermore the main purpose of this story was to be passed down generation to generation for the Huron people so they knew where they came from and since it was passed down orally you can tell it was very special si nce there was no written versions of this story. Overall the main purpose of this story was to show the people how different cultures believed the world was created and how the story was for the Huron people. Ultimately the main purpose of this

Essay Examples on Depression Essay Example

Essay Examples on Depression Paper 1st Essay Sample on Depression Depression is awful disease that affects almost twelve million Americans. Depression can be a crippling disease. It can cause withdrawal, anger, confusion, other diseases, or even death. Suicide caused by depression is the third biggest killer among teenagers. Every forty five minutes a teenager takes his or her life. These are all staggering statistics about a disease that some researchers say may be predisposed. Picture a person(Wendy). Now all of her life Wendy has been â€Å"shy†. Then her grandmother dies. After the death of her grandmother Wendy starts withdrawing from everyday life, and considers taking her life. These are common symptoms of depression. Being depressed can happen to anyone. Most people have mild depression after the death of a loved one, or a very traumatic depression. Every one in five people will have a case of depression in their lifetime. Depression isn’t just a brief blue mood or a passing sadness that lifts in a few hours or even a few day s. 2nd Essay Sample on Depression In the 1930s, the world suffered an economic collapse now known as the Great Depression. It was like a disease that afflicted the entire capitalist world. But it struck Canada more severely than every other capitalist country except the United States. It began in 1929, when the other countries stopped buying Canadian goods. This forced many Canadian industries out of business. Thousands of Canadians lost their jobs. Some lost their homes as well. Nearly every Canadian felt the effects of the Depression. However, the hardest hit were single men and Prairie farmers. During the Great Depression, single men suffered the greatest hardship for two reasons. First, they were not able to find jobs. Single women often found jobs cleaning homes for the wealthy, or working for very low wages in a factory. Such work was rarely available for men. People who were lucky enough to find jobs often earned extremely low wages. Second, single men were not able to receive government relief payments or fo od vouchers. Married unemployed men received these benefits because they had wives and children to support. Single men did not qualify for government relief because they did not have the same responsibilities. The 1930s were even worse for young men just entering the work force. Most of them could not find steady work because there was always someone more experienced applying for the same job. With no money, but plenty of spare time, single men of all ages wandered across the country looking for work. Many could not afford to ride on passenger trains. They often stole rides in, or on, freight trains. â€Å"Riding the rails† was illegal, but there were too few police officers to catch the many riders. The unemployed held PM Bennet totally responsible for not solving the situation before the depression really hit.The Depression years were also difficult times for farmers on the Prairies. Heres What You Really Sound Like In Job Interviews

Heres What You Really Sound Like In Job Interviews You thought you nailed your last interview. You thought you made a great first impression. You totally answered all the tough interview questions they threw at you, asked them interesting and smart questions. And when they asked you if you had anything to add, you totally had stuff to add. This video by Fastcompany highlights the most common mistakes people make at job interviews. See, there’s what you say during a job interview, and then there’s what they hear.Often in interviews, generic answers do not go down well. Your responses to questions are going to be interpreted, and any deviation from what your interviewer wants to hear  might reflect poorly on you during the interview. This doesn’t mean they are inherently impossible to master; they just require a little careful thinking and planning. Remember- when going into an interview, the worst thing you can do is come unprepared! You say: â€Å"Sorry I’m late, there was so much traffic.† This mi ght be true. You never know when it comes to public transportation. I habitually leave way earlier than I have to and am  still sometimes late because the 4 and 5 trains decide to break down for 30 minutes. But this doesn’t matter, becauseThey hear: â€Å"I just don’t care about your time!† It sucks. But what can you do? Just don’t be late. You say: â€Å"What happened with my last job? They didn’t know how to take advantage of my skills.†Ã‚  Yes, this is a very tricky question to answer. You don’t want to badmouth your old company- but truth be told, your unhappiness is actually why you are looking for a new job right now. However, when you say something like this,They hear: â€Å"I have no useful skills.† Yeah, this is not good. Here are some great tips to help you prepare for a job interview. You say: â€Å"My biggest flaw is my perfectionism.†When we are asked this type of question, our first instinct is to paint one of our positives as a negative so it won’t reflect badly on us, but the problem is thatThey hear: †My biggest flaw is that I am a liar.† The best way to handle is question is to first identify an  actual weakness and be honest about it, but also talk about how you  are working to  conquer that weakness. This type of question is actually less about your actual skills, and more about your character. You say: â€Å"Do I have any questions for you? Yes, what’s your vacation policy like?†Ã‚  Don’t! Just don’t ask this question, no matter how innocently you ask†¦Ã‚  They hear: â€Å"I can’t wait to not be at my new job!† You only start talking about benefits when you’ve actually been offered the job.You say: â€Å"I am a team player and a people person.†Ã‚  Although it’s fine to mention that you are a team player and work well with others, always make sure to back up this assertion with examples, or else it just sounds clichà ©.They hear: â€Å"all I have to offer you are  clichà ©s.† Quick note†¦If you are watching this at work†¦make sure to turn down the volume or use your headphones!

Should Companies Allow Employees to Exercise on Work Time Coursework

Should Companies Allow Employees to Exercise on Work Time - Coursework Example Furthermore in a recent research, for workers who were more active physically, job burnout was less likely to develop into depression. In this research, the greatest benefits were attained by people who exercised hours weekly. High levels of energy, as well as daily health, are just among the benefits that originate from exercise. Weight loss is an unbelievable outcome that has happened from exercise for some individuals. Increasing physical activity has been proved to burn more calories, which assists in breaking a weight loss plateau (Scott, 2008). Physical activity has not just proved to reduce obdurate body fat, but also to lower blood pressure levels, cholesterol, as well as reduce the risks of diabetes and cancer (Hellmich, 2008). This enables an individual to live healthier and longer just with some exercise. According to Hellmich (2007), exercising can as well suppress appetite suppressant since it leaves an individual feeling less hungry. Some overweight individuals have been seen to have issues with cardiac problems in later life. Habitual exercise has proved to protect against illnesses linked with persistent low-grade systemic inflammation (Peterson & Pederson, 2005). Being overweight does not automatically mean one may not be in shape. It is in some individuals’ body nature to carry extra weight as indicated in most studies. One research showed that the exercise benefit was enjoyed despite the body mass and that being thinner does not always mean being fitter (Australian, 2007). One can have a look at a manual labor job of several athletes from boxing to football see overweight individuals that are in incredible shape. A number of types of exercise have proved not to assist in ridding away body fat. Moreover, exercise has even been associated to lower the level of stress as well as fire up a range of brain chemicals that might leave an individual feeling happier as well as more relaxed as compared to before she or he
